A Green Way to Ride

There are about 800 bicyclists killed and another 500,000 end up in the hospital emergency room each year.  About two-thirds of deaths and one-third of injuries from riding a bicycles involve the head and face.  According to Thompson, Rivara and Thompson reports, you can reduce your risk 85% by wearing a helmet while riding your electric bike or regular bike.  Other studies showed over 50% reduction in deaths if wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle.  Every 3 days a child is killed by riding a bicycle in the U.S. and at least 100 children are treated in emergency rooms due to bicycle-related head injuries.  Nearly one-half of the children (ages 4-17) never wear a helmet in areas where there is no bicycle helmet law.  Only 21 states have helmet-use laws for children.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 40,000 head injuries and about 50,000 scalp and face injuries would be prevented each year (in children ages 4-15),  if they wore a helmet while riding their bikes.  Seventy- eight percent of parents report their children ages 4-17 ride bicycles, yet 27% never wear helmets while riding.

Look for a helmet that has the (CPSC) Consumer Product Safety Committee sticker.  ASTM, ANSI and Snell all meet this standard.  The helmet should fit snug and comfortable.  When buckled it should not move side to side, up or down, or tilt back or forward.  You should see the very edge of the helmet when looking up.  The straps should be “Y” shaped coming together at the earlobe and be snug.  The chin strap should only allow one finger between the chin and buckle.

Be responsible and wear your helmet while riding any bike or electric bike.

I think this is a great post and I find the info very helpful. Sometimes when I write, I just let the flow of the words and information come out so much that I loose the purpose. It’s only after editing when I realize what I’ve done. There’s defiantly a lot of great tips here I’m going to try to be more aware of.
